Annual Service · 100-Hour Service

Annual service,on one work order.

Every annual at Coastal Marine runs the same eleven-item checklist — the one below, item for item — done by factory-trained Yamaha technicians at the Shore Drive shop in Virginia Beach.

Why it matters

The boring work
that prevents the expensive kind.

Warranty work stays here

Yamaha limits warranty service to Yamaha dealers. Coastal Marine does that work in-house, so the shop that services your engine is also the one that can cover it.

Once a year or every 100 hours

Yamaha's own recommended interval, whichever comes first. Most boats on the Bay hit the calendar before they hit the hours.

You see the line items

The work order is the same checklist every time, so you know what was done before you look at the bill.

Ready when you are.

What's on it

Eleven items,
every single time.

This is the work order. It is the same eleven items on every annual, which is what makes it worth publishing — you can read it before you book and check it against the invoice afterward. It is run by an Elite Yamaha dealer with a factory-trained Yamaha Master Technician on the bench.

  • 01Replace fuel filter (engine)The engine-mounted filter is the last thing between bad fuel and the injectors.
  • 02Replace fuel/water separatorEthanol fuel pulls water. The separator catches it before the engine does.
  • 03Replace gear lubeDraining it is how you find water in the lower unit — milky lube means a seal is going.
  • 04Replace oil filterStandard on any four-stroke oil service.
  • 05Fuel conditionerStabilizes what's left in the tank between trips and over the winter.
  • 06Replace spark plugsCheap parts, and a fouled plug is one of the most common no-start calls.
  • 07Yamaha computer downloadPulls the engine's own logged history — hours, faults, over-rev events. It needs Yamaha's diagnostic software, so it's the part a general shop usually can't do.
  • 08Engine inspectionEyes on the powerhead, hoses, clamps, and anodes while the cowling is already off.
  • 09Grease all pointsSteering, tilt tube, and linkages. Skipped grease is how a tilt tube seizes.
  • 10Corrosion preventativeSaltwater boat, Chesapeake Bay. This is not optional here.
  • 11Propeller inspectionIncluding fishing line wrapped behind the prop, which cuts the seal and floods the gearcase.

If the annual turns something up

Most annuals are just the checklist. When one turns up a repair, the Yamaha bench handles it — and if the engine has aged past being worth fixing, we'll say so.

Common questions

Annual service,
asked and answered.

At Coastal Marine in Virginia Beach, the annual service runs the same eleven-item work order every time: replace the engine fuel filter, replace the fuel/water separator, replace the gear lube, replace the oil filter, add fuel conditioner, replace the spark plugs, run a Yamaha computer download, inspect the engine, grease all points, apply corrosion preventative, and inspect the propeller. You see those line items on the work order.

Once a year or every 100 hours of running time, whichever comes first. Most boats kept on the Chesapeake Bay reach the calendar mark before the hour mark, so an annual service is the normal interval even for a boat that gets used lightly. Booking before the spring season starts gets you a slot faster than booking during it.

Yes. Yamaha limits warranty-covered service work to Yamaha dealers, and Coastal Marine is an authorized Yamaha dealer that performs warranty work in-house — so the annual service and any warranty repair happen at the same shop rather than your engine going elsewhere. Note that Yamaha's limited warranty does not cover normal maintenance and wear items such as spark plugs, filters, propellers, water pumps, and anodes. Call (757) 464-4600 with your engine model and serial number if you want coverage checked before you book.

It pulls the engine's own logged history off its onboard computer — running hours, stored fault codes, and over-rev events. It is part of every annual service at Coastal Marine and it is the item a general repair shop usually cannot do, because it needs Yamaha's diagnostic software and factory training. It is also the fastest way to see whether a used outboard has been run the way its owner says it has.

Coastal Marine Sales & Services performs annual and 100-hour outboard service at 3765 Shore Drive in Virginia Beach, near the Lesner Bridge. The shop is open Tuesday through Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 2pm, with Sunday and Monday by appointment. Send a service request or call (757) 464-4600 to book a slot.

Not necessarily. Coastal Marine can pick a boat up around Virginia Beach, service it at the Shore Drive shop, and bring it back. Whether a particular boat qualifies depends on its size and how reachable it is to tow, and there is no set price — the shop confirms the pickup details and any cost before setting a time. Mention pickup on your service request or call (757) 464-4600.
